1. Tension Control: Maintaining constant tension with FMS products
Winding/unwinding, slitting, coating, printing and many other production processes require constant material tension.
Closed loop tension control principle
Force Sensors (load cells):
Operational reliability and accuracy of measurement determine the productivity and quality of the processing. The type of processing, the material and factors such as temperature, humidity, and changing winding diameters would lead to continuous variations of the tension in the processed material – without closed loop tension control. FMS Force Sensors determine the tension and send a signal proportional to the tension to the FMS electronic units. The defining characteristics of the individually tested FMS Force Sensors are their capacity to withstand extreme overload conditions while maintaining the highest accuracy in the industry. This is accomplished through built-in mechanical stops to protect against overload and the utilization of foil-type strain gauges installed in a full Wheatstone Bridge configuration in each sensor to ensure the highest measuring accuracy. The sensors have to be determined for each application and FMS provides a wide range of sensors. The calculation can be done very easily with theCalculator.
FMS Tension Measuring Amplifiers and Closed Loop Tension Controllers process the signals from the Force Sensors and have each been specifically developed for use in tension control applications. The measuring amplifiers provide a 0..10V signal or can transmit the feedback values via a Bus System (ProfiBus, CAN or various Ethernet protocols), while the tension controllers generate a feedback value as well as an output value for a drive, brake, or clutch.
Force Measuring Sensors (Load Cells) for Web Tension Control
All FMS force measuring sensors are characterised by its highest overload protection and its designated accuracy. It is achieved by a mechanical hardstop and four foil-type strain gauges in a full wheatstone bridge configuration. The red point on the outside of the sensor indicates the positive measuring direction.

2. Introduction to web guiding
Web guiding: Many processes require material webs whose positions are precisely guided. FMS web guides detect the position of the material with web guide sensors, calculate the deviation from the reference position, and maintain the material at the required position with a steering frame actuator. FMS’s wide range of web tension control and web guiding products offer many possible modular combinations to cover virtually all applications.
Closed loop control
The FMS web guide is mounted as close as possible to the location where the positional accuracy is required. With an FMS-webMASTER, the length of the steering frame (L) should be the same as the maximum material width (Mmax). For optimal control, the web guide sensor is mounted as close as possible to the outfeed of the steering frame. With an FMS-webDIRECTOR the guiding of the material will take place over a virtual turning point in the infeed run of the steering frame.
FMS-winderGLIDE The actuators of the FMS-winderGLIDE series have been specifically developed for use in unwind and winding stations. Utilizing powerful drives ensures they are suitable for moving large rolls and stands. The web guide sensor is mounted as close as possible to the nearest idler roller. US01B/04B Series Ultrasonic Edge Sensor
The ultrasonic sensors US01B/04B are suitable for the detection of all materials with the exception of sound transmissive ones (e.g. no open weave textiles). They are factory set, so that no adjustements are necessary. The main advantage of the US series is the reliable detection of transparent films.Due to the various sizes the sensors have a wide application range.
AZS01B/04B BlueFlash Optical Edge Sensor

Manual Sensor Adjustment BKS.V.A
The manual sensor adjustment BKS.V.A allows positioning of the sensors over the total width of the material. It consists of a steel profile, which is fixed to the steering frame, or seperately mounted. The sensors are attached to the profile with brackets that may be moved sideways.

The manual sensor adjustment BKS.V allows positioning of the sensors over the total width of the material. Because of the closed steel profile the BKS.V allows larger distances between supports. Profiles of 20mm and 40mm are available.
Motorized Sensor Adjustment BKS.T
The motorized sensor adjustment BKS.T consists of an aluminium profile with a carriage that can be positioned over the total range of movement without play, by a stepper motor. Thus the material edge can be automatically searched over the complete width of the web. One motorized sensor adjustment is required per sensor.
3. Belt Scales
The belt scales of the BMGZ-series weighs every kind of bulk goods, such as sand, gravel, broken stones, coal, building rubble etc. The measuring stations are thank their hermetically sealed components, their contact-less belt speed detection and their rugged design well suited for the extreme ambient conditions of this industry. BMGZ belt scales are very durable, accurate and reliable. Owing to their universal assembly parts and their compact dimensions they can be easily mounted in nearly every conveyor or mobile crasher.
The belt scales of FMS operate according to the following principal:
